Celebrate Star Wars Day: May the Fourth be with you

Born in 1977, the "Star Wars" series of live-action films -- 11 of them to date -- has long been enshrined in popular culture. Given their immense popularity, it's hard to believe, as Ronald Brownstein wrote in his recent book, "Rock Me on the Water: 1974 - the Year Los Angeles Transformed Movies, Music, Television, and Politics," that it took several years for George Lucas to pull together the funding and studio support for "a space epic inspired by the Saturday morning movie serials of his youth." The payoff was substantial, for within a few months of its arrival, "Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope" was at the time the biggest-earning movie in history.

Ever the nostalgist, Lucas was unusual among the filmmakers of his generation for not caring much about what was going on around him: He celebrated carefree youth, as with the 1973 film "American Graffiti," and the kind of sci-fi in which the good guys have plenty of tough scrapes but emerge victorious. The challenges of the ongoing pandemic these days make a deep dive into the fantasy universe of "Star Wars" just right. And, thanks to the efforts of a devoted fan base and the movie machine behind the series alike, May 4 is just the day to do it.The day was made for a punning slogan: "May the Fourth be with you." The origins of what has become an annual holiday for true believers are a little murky.

Biden warns North Korea against escalation after missile attack

WASHINGTON: President Joe Biden (pix) warned North Korea Thursday that the United States will “respond accordingly” if it escalates its military testing, after Pyongyang fired two missiles in its first major provocation since he took office.

The nuclear-armed North has a long history of using weapons tests to ramp up tensions, in a carefully calibrated process to try to forward its objectives.

Biden’s response demonstrates a change of tone from his predecessor Donald Trump, who engaged in an extraordinary diplomatic bromance with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and last year repeatedly played down similar short-range launches.

Pyongyang had been biding its time since the new administration took office, not even officially acknowledging its existence until last week.

But on Thursday it launched two weapons from its east coast into the Sea of Japan, known as the East Sea in Korea.

It was a violation of UN resolutions and the US was “consulting with our partners and allies,“ Biden said, warning North Korea that “there will be responses if they choose to escalate. We will respond accordingly.”

“I’m also prepared for some form of diplomacy, but it has to be conditioned upon the end result of denuclearization,“ he told reporters.

Japanese owner of ship stuck in Suez Canal apologises

TOKYO: Shoei Kisen, the Japanese owner of a container ship stuck in the Suez Canal that is holding up potentially billions of dollars of traded goods, apologised today and added that it was working towards a resolution of the situation.

It said getting the ship moving was “extremely difficult”, but that there were no injuries or oil spillage caused by it running aground.

“We sincerely apologise for causing a great deal of concern,” the company said in an English statement more than 24 hours after the grounding.

It said there were 25 crew on board, all of them of Indian nationality.

The ship was fully laden with consumer goods bound for European markets in 20,000 standard shipping containers.

The specialist salvage company in charge of trying to get the ship moving describes it like a “beached whale”.

The 400m container ship has resisted attempts to get it to move off the sandy edge of a narrow portion of the Canal.

The ship wedged against the edge of the Canal after losing control of steering in high winds.

Why Did North Korea Sever Diplomatic Ties With Malaysia?

In a peculiar twist last week, North Korea – formally the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) – announced that it was severing its diplomatic relations with Malaysia, after Malaysia’s highest court approved the extradition of a North Korean businessman, Mun Chol Myong, to the U.S. to face charges of money laundering. Mun is wanted for laundering funds in violation of United Nations and U.S. sanctions. The Malaysian government in turn expelled North Korean diplomats and severed diplomatic relations in accordance with Article 9 of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations 1961.

Even before this latest episode, Malaysia’s relationship with North Korea was frosty, due to the  assassination of Kim Jong Nam, North Korea’s Premier Kim Jong Un’s estranged brother, at Kuala Lumpur International Airport in February 2017. Malaysia suspected North Korea had a role in the assassination and subsequently suspended the DPRK’s diplomatic mission.

Prior to that ties between Malaysia and North Korea were relatively benign. Malaysia served as one of key hubs of economic engagement in Southeast Asia, from which North Korea conducted trade with the region, and functioned as an avenue for its engagement with the region via the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). North Korea is also a member of the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF), an inclusive multilateral security platform.

Indeed, the DPRK’s ties with Malaysia had mostly served North Korea’s strategic interests well during the two nations’ 48 years of bilateral ties. The U.S. and South Korea have used this geopolitical nexus to communicate with North Korea on security issues and humanitarian aid indirectly via Malaysia and at the sidelines of ARF meetings. South Korea’s own New Southern Policy (NSP), aiming for closer geo-economic cooperation with ASEAN, also has acted as a veiled conduit to the DPRK, hoping that ASEAN will serve as an informal strategic bridge connecting with North Korea.

So why then did North Korea decide to sever its diplomatic relations with an important albeit a cautious strategic player in Southeast Asia?

COVID-19: Malaysian business owners and trade groups urge against another full lockdown

KUALA LUMPUR: The automotive workshop owned by Mr Wong Tung Khong in Sungai Besi was quiet on Tuesday (Jan 26), with only a few employees servicing customers' cars.

"This time last year, I wouldn't even have time to answer your questions because people wanted their cars serviced before going back to their hometowns for Chinese New Year," Mr Wong, 36, told CNA.This round, he said, his staff had remarked how quiet and less busy the workshop was. Unlike during the first movement control order (MCO) from March to May last year, Mr Wong's workshop is operational as usual in this current MCO, which is enforced nationwide in Malaysia except for Sarawak until Feb 4. Last year, when his workshop reopened as the country transitioned into conditional MCO (CMCO), he was busy with a backlog of requests from before the shutdown. Business then slowed down by October, when COVID-19 cases surged following the Sabah state election in September.

FSG and Liverpool are taking £130m gamble in the transfer market

Liverpool do have the funds to make a January transfer addition this month - with their reluctance to do so more down to a strategic, calculated gamble than having no money available to spend.

That is what football finance expert Kieran Maguire has outlined amidst scrutiny over the decision by Liverpool, their recruitment team and FSG to put off spending on new players until the summer transfer window, despite their injury crisis.

"Liverpool do have the ability to go out and buy a player - that, for me, there is no doubt," Maguire told the ECHO on a Blood Red podcast to be released on Saturday, January 30.

"They have been hit by Covid, as have every other club, but if we look at the European market, transfer prices have fallen by a third across UEFA’s borders.

'Godzilla Vs. Kong' trailer: Ultimate showdown of legendary movie monsters

Two legendary titans face off in the first trailer for the new movie Godzilla vs. Kong.

Released on Warner Bros.' YouTube channel Sunday morning, the trailer gives viewers their first glimpse at the ultimate showdown between Godzilla and King Kong.

The two exchange blows above the ocean, with Kong knocking Godzilla into the water, only for Godzilla to fire back with his atomic heat beam.

The film's release date was recently moved up to March 26 from May 21 after being moved around multiple times by Warner Bros due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Following the Christmas Day release of Wonder Woman 1984Godzilla vs. Kong will be one of the next tentpole films that Warner Bros. will release simultaneously in theatres and on the streaming platform HBO Max.

Legendary Pictures, the production company behind Godzilla vs. Kong, initially announced the project in 2015 as a crossover event between the Godzilla and King Kong franchises. This includes 2014's Godzilla, 2017's Kong: Skull Island and 2019's Godzilla: King of The Monsters.

Adam Wingard, who's best known for his horror films such as Death Note and Blair Witch, directed the film. It stars Alexander Skarsgard, Millie Bobby Brown, Rebecca Hall and Brian Tyree Henry.

Godzilla vs. Kong is being released in the middle of the pandemic and US consumers have the option of watching it from home with an HBO Max subscription or in theatres, though many around the country are still closed, so the film's box office potential is up in the air.

The film has the same US$160mil budget as Godzilla, which grossed US$524.9mil worldwide in 2014. Kong: Skull Island completed its box office run at US$566mil, while Godzilla: King Of The Monsters grossed US$386mil.

Given the franchise's international appeal and many countries beginning to roll out the Covid-19 vaccine, it will be interesting to see if Godzilla vs. Kong will pass the US$160mil threshold. – Reuters

COVID: 58 returning SPM/STPM students in Sabah infected with Covid-19 as of yesterday

KOTA KINABALU: Fifty-eight students have been tested positive with Covid-19 during a screening carried out prior to returning to school as of Jan 24.

The infection among students were recorded in Sandakan (10 cases); Lahad Datu (7); Semporna (7); Tawau (6); Kalabakan (4); Kota Marudu (4); Kudat (4); Kinabatangan (3); Ranau (3); Telupid (2); Tongod (2); Beaufort (1); Keningau (1); Kota Belud (1); Kunak (1); Papar (1); and Pitas (1).

The screening were done on Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) and Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia (STPM) candidates during registration for hostel admission.

At the moment, Sabah Covid-19 spokesperson Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun said the screening was only being carried out on students and not returning teachers. "Nonetheless, the state Health Department would like to remind teachers and school staff to always be aware of their health and to see a doctor for a screening test if they have symptoms.

"At the same time, compliance with Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) should be given serious attention," he said in a press conference, today.

COVID 19: 58 Form Five, Form Six students in Sabah test positive

KOTA KINABALU: A total of 58 Form Five and Form Six students in Sabah tested positive for Covid-19 on Sunday (Jan 24).

Minister in charge of Covid-19 affairs in the state, Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun said these students were tested prior to returning to hostels, and were close contacts of positive patients.

“They are all under quarantine in their respective districts comprising 10 in Sandakan, seven each in Lahad Datu and Semporna, six in Tawau, four each in Kalabakan, Kota Marudu and Kudat, three in Kinabatangan and Ranau respectively, two each in Telupid and Tongod, and one in Beaufort, ” he said during his daily briefing here, Monday (Jan 25).

He said these students will be sitting for the SPM and STPM exams this year.

Other cases also include one each in Keningau, Kota Belud, Kunak, Papar and Pitas.

Responding to a recent news report of a group of students being sent for quarantine after their teacher tested positive for Covid-19 in SMK Tulid, Sook, Masidi said these students have all been tested and placed under quarantine.

“So far, one teacher and a student tested positive, while 64 others are close contacts of these patients, ” he said

Initial investigations suggest that the positive cases contracted it outside the school and tested positive prior to returning to school hostels.

Masidi said these cases were detected early and the two victims down with Covid-19 have been quickly separated from the public.

“Disinfection on the whole school has also been conducted, ” he said, adding that there was no need for the school to close.

“Classes for the SPM and STPM candidates commenced with strict SOPs, ” he said.

Masidi reminded all students and teachers to be aware of their health conditions, especially those who have returned to their hostels and are attending face-to-face classes.

Sabah, he said, recorded 348 new cases on Monday (Jan 25) out of which 251 or over 70% were close contacts of Covid-19 patients.

“Three deaths were recorded on Jan 25 with a new cluster detected from a shrimp farm in Tawau, ” he said.

Masidi said from the new cases recorded, it is clear that people still continue to disregard the advice to fully observe SOPs such as physical distancing and wearing face masks.

“From my observation, when I went to the city centre recently, I noticed some form of compliance, but many were still oblivious to the dangers of Covid-19 and not following SOPs in public, ” he said.

Asked if he expects a stricter SOP on Chinese New Year celebrations, Masidi said it was hard to say, and he could not speculate.

“I think the SOP will reflect the seriousness of these cases in our country and our efforts to curb the spread of the virus but at the same time, allow for some form of little celebration within households, ” Masidi said.
